10 Year Challenge; Another Manipulation Humans Fell For or Harmless Fun?

Recently, another ‘challenge’ came up across Facebook, where users post a photo of themselves from 2009 and another from this year to see the change. It wasn’t until after the challenge went viral users started questioning the intentions behind the challenge; is this Facebook’s attempt to grow its artificial intelligence (AI) platform for cutting edge business technology, a harmless laugh had at the office gone viral, or a way for AI to help in the cases of missing children?

In any case, is it so terrible for a company to want the best technology and go about it in a harmless way? Shouldn’t employees have a laugh at work, we do spend nearly half our lives there, may as well have a good time. Any way the people can help a person or the authorities find a missing child should be acceptable to most if not all. Numerous social media users and people find great joy in trying to read between the lines of any and everything that comes across a screen to wreak havoc in the NEWS. Luckily for those, participation is not mandatory!

You’re right. Facial recognition technology is a double-edged sword. What may seem like harmless fun in one instance places implicit biases in another. Well-done.
