We talked a lot about the social media and business last class. It is so true that many companies nowadays try to promote their products and ideas through different kinds of social media platforms.
Promoting businesses on social media is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the company can accumulate customers via social media as long as they use the social media well. But on the other hand, users will more quickly point out the mistakes the companies made on social media and spread out immediately because of the fast speed of the social media, which will definitely have negative impacts on the brands.
Besides the brands we talked about in class, I found there are two other companies that also do a great job on the social media.
The first one is ‘GoPro’ (manufacturer of action cameras), which really offers its customers strong sense of presence on its social media page. For example, on the ‘GoPro’ instagram page, every post is selected from camera users’ shots. And under each photo, it will make hash tag about the related places, seasons, people or famous landscapes and also @ the customer who provides the photo. This can largely empower the GoPro users and inspire them to actively post photos via their own social media accounts and @GoPro so that the photos may have the chance to be selected to appear on the GoPro official social media account. I think GoPro conducted a very successful social media campaign to keep its existing customers and attract more new customers.
Another successful example is the DEALMOON (a shopping deal site). Its success is due to its accurate choice of the customer segments and social media platform. At the start of the DEALMOON, WEIBO (the Chinese version twitter) just became popular among Chinese young people. DEALMOON decided to create the WEIBO account to attract Chinese people who live in North America because it knows clearly that the Chinese people in America are a large consumer group and often have economic strength to use the deal sites. DEALMOON has had over 5 million followers so far.
I would like to say companies can have a business growth via the social media, but they must have the right segments, right strategy and right plan to launch their social media campaign, otherwise the social media can have extremely negative impacts on the companies.
