In a galaxy far far away, actually in a Penn classroom about 14 weeks ago, I did my first blog titled I Heart Emojis. So, I thought I would employ a full circle ending and make my last blog about an interesting little article I found on some new emojis. The Star Wars emoji.
In anticipation of the next Star Wars film titled The Force Awakens, Twitter teamed up with Disney and Lucasfilm to create these special emojis. Now what’s special about these emojis is not just how cute they are but rather the innovative way in which they are available. These emojis are not part of the standard Unicode selection found on your iPhone keyboard but instead are only available in Twitter and only in combination with hashtags that have been specially created to promote the new film.
Notice how the emoji is actually part of the hashtag. One of the problems with hashtags is that there are too many of them and they don’t always generate the following they are intended too. By integrating the emoji image into the hashtag itself, Twitter, Disney, and Lucasfilm has reinvented the hashtag. In Disney speak, this might even be considered reimagineering. Given the cult following of Star Wars fans and the desire to be the first kid on the block to have the latest Star War gadget, I suspect that these hashtags have a very good chance of hitting their target and that the Force will be strong with this one.
