With an event like the Oscars, undoubtedly there is going to be a huge social media following giving the actors/actresses/composers/&directors publicity. In the business they say “there is no such thing as bad publicity” but it seems Sunday night Sean Penn stepped in it, with an all time low for the Oscars of 36.6 million viewers to witness it. Penn was revealing the winner of Best Picture, and before he told us who won he said something some are claiming to be “racist and offensive” while others claim its an “inside joke” and to get off your high horse. He said “Who gave this son of a b**** his green card?” and the twitter and Facebook responses went up almost instantly.
I guess the question here is in this day in age how can you not be aware of the uproar that will ensue when stating a comment like this in front of millions. Are those sitting behind computer screens on their media accounts over-reacting? Or are we truly desensitized to our words for the sake or humor, leaving those sparred with the only outlet that makes them feel heard: Social Media
