What’s your status? Facebook recently added new gender options to profiles

Last Thursday, Facebook added about 50 new gender options to profiles covering statuses from transgendered to asexual identities. Having a few friends who have gone through or who have thought about the transgendered process, this allows them to be true to themselves and share who they are with the social media world.

Martha Mendoza (AP) covered this story, which was shared on many news outlets such as CNN and Philly.com. Facebook worked with top activists in the LGBT community to add these options to their new customizable profile. Sources shared that this change was supported from Mark Zuckerberg and the top staff at Facebook all the way down to actual employees who felt the change was necessary and needed in today’s changing world. The customizable profile introduces not only the new gender categories, but the ability to hide and publish as little or as much information as the user wishes along with the proper usage of preferred pronouns.

It’s nice to see Facebook working to be more inclusive. I think this is a “click” in the right direction…

  1. As long as it’s kept “optional” I love it. That also would help to create a more community feel.
