Who Watches you While you Surf the internet?

When I was at my friend’s house yesterday, we searched the web for places to see in Florence (his wedding and honeymoon are approaching). He kept getting a pop up on the side of his browser and I asked him what it was. This is when he informed me about Ghostery. Ghostery is a free download that tracks and gives you a roll-call of the ad networks, behavioral data providers, web publishers, and other companies interested in your activity. It was amazing to see everything what popped up as we surfed the web. Google Analytics, double click and a host of other programs all tracked us. It was kind of bizarre and disturbing to see a tangible list of programs tracking and ultimately invading our privacy as we searched the web. The best part about Ghostery is that you can control who is watching you. The program allows you to block trackers, behavioral data providers or web-publishers that you don’t trust. I encourage everyone to try it out, but be prepared to feel creeped out by who is watching.
