In the midst of the entertainment, cars, food, and sex in the social-media atmosphere emanating from the Super Bowl, I’ve been struck by the serious political discussions. Whether on the periphery of, from the heart of, or unrelated to the Super Bowl campaigns, there’s definitely something in the air reeking of politics. Why? The presidential election? The impact of social media in the Middle East’s “Arab Spring”? The ease with which we can anonymously vent our political views?
Clint Eastwood’s plug for Detroit and serious commentary regarding the future direction of this country—via a Chrysler ad on “Halftime in America”—drew praise and heat from all sides of the political spectrum.
