Pew Research Center recently released their findings on a 2012 survey on the demographics of users for 5 of the top Social Media platforms. The results from this survey broke out the specifics of Gender, Race/Ethnicity, Age, Education attainment, Household income, and Urbanity.
While target-based marketing is not anything new, this information adds another level of knowledge for businesses wanting to appeal to a specific demographic. As opposed to marketing based on keywords, likes, or hashtags this information can give a business a better idea of what their level of successfulness could be on one platform versus another.
